Carolyn M. Washington Obituary

Thomasville, Georgia - Carolyn M. Washington, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great‑grandmother, and beloved member of the Thomasville community, entered eternal rest after a life marked by faith, service, and compassion. Born January 11, 1945, in Pompano Beach, Florida, she was the daughter of the late Josephine Cromartie and Bud Moss. In her early childhood, Carolyn, her mother, and her brother Willie moved to Thomasville, Georgia—a place that would become the heart of her life and legacy.

After settling in Thomasville, Carolyn was lovingly raised by her mother and her stepfather, Oscar Cromartie Sr., alongside her brothers, Willie A. Jones and Oscar Cromartie Jr. Their guidance nurtured her strong work ethic, her deep compassion for others, and her lifelong commitment to learning. She attended Douglas High School and proudly graduated with the Class of 1962. Her pursuit of higher education led her to Paine College in Augusta, Georgia, where she received a Nursing Diploma; to Tuskegee Institute in Tuskegee, Alabama, where she earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1972; and ultimately to Albany State College, where she achieved her Master's Degree in Nursing—an accomplishment that reflected her dedication to excellence and her passion for serving others through healthcare.

In 1973, Carolyn married Henry H. Washington Jr., the love of her life. Together they built a home grounded in faith, respect, and unwavering devotion. Their marriage of 34 years was a testament to partnership and love, lasting until Henry's passing in 2007. Carolyn remained the steady, loving center of her family—deeply proud of her children, grandchildren, and great‑grandchildren, whose lives she enriched with her wisdom, warmth, and gentle strength.

Carolyn dedicated more than four decades to public health, serving the people of Thomas County with grace, professionalism, and a servant's heart. Her career culminated in her role as Director of the Thomas County Health Department, where she worked tirelessly to improve the health and well‑being of countless families. She was widely respected for her leadership, her compassion, and her unwavering commitment to community service.

A woman of deep and abiding faith, Carolyn was a lifelong member of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church. She served her church in many capacities throughout her life—singing in the choir, teaching Sunday School, serving as church secretary, and ultimately being honored as a Mother of the Church. Her devotion to her church family reflected the values she lived daily, and her presence was a steady source of kindness, encouragement, and spiritual strength.

Carolyn was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Henry H. Washington Jr.; her mother, Josephine Cromartie; her stepfather, Oscar Cromartie Sr.; her father, Bud Moss; her brother, Willie A. Jones; and her brother, Oscar Cromartie Jr.

Carolyn's legacy continues through the family she cherished deeply. She is survived by her children: Henry H. Washington III of McDonough, Georgia; Paula C. Washington of Charlotte, North Carolina; Angela W. Jones of Marietta, Georgia; Gregory T. Washington of Thomasville, Georgia; and Michelle W. Curry (Mathis) of Powder Springs, Georgia.

She was the proud grandmother of Camille Jones, Cameron Curry, Tyson Jones, Caleb Curry, and Camden Curry, and the delighted great‑grandmother of Daelyn M. Jones.

She also shared a special bond with her goddaughter, Katava Virgil (Leo), along with her god‑grandchildren Charmoines Jordan, Quinton Reese, and Eric Hudson, and her seven god‑great‑grandchildren, each of whom held a treasured place in her heart.

Carolyn M. Washington will be remembered as a gracious public servant, a devoted wife, a loving mother, and a pillar of her community. Her legacy lives on in the many lives she touched—through her family, her church, and the generations of Thomas County residents who benefited from her dedication to public health. Her life was a testament to service, faith, and love, and her memory will continue to inspire all who were blessed to know her.
