It is with deepest sorrow that we announce the passing of Betty Jo Delaney who went to be with her Lord and Savior on February 12th, 2025. She was born May 17, 1938 to Nettie May Newsome and Louis Edward (Doc) Newsome in Patton, GA. She was one of three sisters (Francis and Suzie) and she had one brother (Louis aka Buddy) - all who preceded her in death.
She was raised on a small sharecropping farm growing and picking cotton and tobacco. Her father died from a fever when she was just a small child leaving her mother to raise her 4 children and keep the farm going. She graduated from Pavo High School and her first employment was at the Watson-Scott Company in Thomasville, GA as a Seamstress.
In 1965 she hit the jackpot and married the love of her life, Howard Sylvester Delaney, who also preceded her in death three years ago. In 1969 she gave birth to her son, Steven Howard Delaney. Steven was delivered by C-Section and it was discovered during the delivery that she had uterine cancer. She was forced to leave her newborn for months to receive radiation treatments at Emory Hospital in Atlanta. Against the odds she survived but the radiation left her with health problems for the rest of her life and this ultimately contributed to her death.
She was a devoted homemaker, mother, and wife. She loved God, her church (First Baptist Thomasville), her crafting and most of all gardening and yard work and she was still cutting her own grass weekly at age 86. She possessed a wonderful sense of humor and always showed grace in the face of adversity. She truly had a beautiful soul and she will be greatly missed.
A Graveside Service will be held at Laurel Hill Cemetery on Saturday - February 15, 2025 at 3:00 pm with Dr. Jimmy Clanton officiating.
