Pastor Harold's Story

Funeral services for Pastor Harold Rooks Pullen Sr. will be held at 11:30 a.m., on Wednesday May 3, 2017 in the Allen & Allen Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Ken Burgess, Pastor Ralph Fudge and Wayne Dollar officiating. Private interment will be in Big Ochlocknee Baptist Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Harold R. Pullen Jr., Danny Pullen, Harold R. Pullen III (Rooks), Keith Bannister, Jody Smith and Reese Smith. Honorary pallbearers will be the Thomas County Board of Education members, Thomas County School employees and area ministers. Pastor Pullen passed away on April 29, 2017 at his home. Born on November 21, 1929 in Damascus, Georgia, he was the son of the late Thomas Metts Pullen and Mamie Lee Rooks Pullen. He was also preceded in death by his step-mother, Annie Laurie Hughes Pullen who raised him after the death of his mother when he was 5 years old. He was raised on the family farm before serving in the U.S. Navy from 1948-1949. During this time he was offered a full scholarship to the Naval Academy as an officer but refused the scholarship due to the Lord calling him into the ministry and to preach. Pastor Pullen graduated from Mercer University with his master's degree in biology and theology. He began his career in the ministry in Damascus, Georgia and his education career in Tennille, Georgia as a biology teacher and vice principal. In 1965 he moved to Thomas County where he was called as pastor of Coolidge Baptist Church and the dean of Norman College in Norman Park, Georgia. He worked as the assistant school superintendent in the Thomas County School System until retirement. Pastor Pullen also served in several churches in Thomas and Colquitt counties before retiring from Big Ochlocknee Baptist Church after 65 years of preaching. He is survived by his wife, Patricia Pullen of Pavo; children, Elizabeth Dale Banister, Harold R. Pullen Jr. (Hal) and Danny Joe Pullen all of Coolidge; grandchildren, Elizabeth Lane Daniel, Harold R. Pullen III (Rooks), Dawn Smith, Amy Mitchell; great-grandchildren, Braylen Paul Daniel, Vallie Smith, Reese Smith, Emma Mitchell, and Wyatt Mitchell; brother, Robert Lynn Pullen of Damascus, Ga. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Metts Pullen and Dr. Marion Pullen and grandson, Timothy Warren.
