WORLD WAR II VETERAN's Story

Funeral services for John W. Searles, 93, of Thomasville will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, December 22, 2017, at Eastside Baptist Church. He has been a member there since 1951 and has served in several areas (deacon, treasurer & Sunday School teacher.) Rev. Tim Robson, assisted by Rev. Cham McMillen, will officiate the service and interment will be at Laurel Hill Cemetery. Mr. Searles passed away December 19 at Archbold Memorial Hospital. He was born on August 3, 1924 in Richmond, Virginia. He was the son of the late Robert and Julia Searles. He married Mary Gibbs Searls on February 24, 1945. Mr. Searles was a manager at Bogan Supply Co. for about 40 years, and later became part owner of Triple J Plumbing. He enlisted in the U.S. Army infantry in 1943. After intense fighting with German troops in Italy, he was severely wounded and sent to Findley General Hospital in Thomasville for surgery and recovery. That is where he met his wife. For his service, Searles was awarded the bronze star and two purple hearts. He is our hero. He loved his God, his family and his country. He is survived by his wife, Mary Searles. Other survivors include daughter and husband Barbara and Richard Ryerson; son and wife, Travis and Amy Gibbs; grandchildren, Julie Dinkins, Eric Ryerson and Amber Niswonger and several great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four brothers and three sisters. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. today at Whiddon-Shiver Funeral Home.
