Services for Vurn Eva Houston, 78, of Cairo, are at noon, Saturday, Aug. 12, 2017, at First Unity Missionary Baptist Church. The Rev. Charlie Ross will officiate and interment is in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers are Shawn Tyson, Jessie Tyson, Charles Martin, Walter Thompson, Juwan Wilson and Curtis Guyton Jr. Mrs. Houston died Aug. 5 at her residence. Born Dec. 28, 1938, in Turner County,?Georgia, she was the daughter of the late Buddy and Betty Gamble Brookins. She was married in Thomas County to Freddie Houston. She was a member of Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church and First Unity Missionary Baptist Church. She had lived for 60 years in Thomasville and retired from the W.H. Flowers family after 40 years. Survivors include her husband, Freddie Houston of Thomasville; daughter, Thelma Gammage of Cairo; son, Freddie Lee Houston of Columbus; daughters, Katie L. Guyton (Curtis) of Cairo, Betty S. Houston (Charles) of Tallahassee, Florida, Taffy Spencer of Columbia, South Carolina; brothers, John C .Tyson of Cordele, William Tyson of Cordele; brothers-in-law, David Jake Houston of Springfield, Virginia, J.W. Houston of Phildelphia, Pennsylvania; sister-in-law, Gwendolyn Morrow (Steve) of Thomasville; brother-in-law, Tony A. Gilley (Mae) of Atlanta; extended family, the W.H. Flowers family, the Croziers, Woods and Shields; and numerous other relatives and friends. Special thanks to the Flowers, Croziers, Woods, Shields families, Dr. Merrill Hicks and Southwest Georgia Hospice.
