Marvin's Story

Marvin Eustace Gibson was called home by his Heavenly Father on April 17, 2017. He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Janis. They have enjoyed sharing 30 of those years living in the house his grandfather built around 1900. He passed away in the same bedroom where he had been brought as a newborn 77 ½ years ago. He was the oldest child of Eustace and Alma Gibson. Other children are Ruby Jo Bryant and Francis Gibson of Thomasville and Daniel Gibson (deceased) of Stone Mountain, Georgia. After graduating from Thomasville High School in 1957, he served in the U.S. Air Force as a radio operator until 1962. He then worked in the wholesale grocery business until his retirement. He worked as an office clerk, salesman, buyer and general manager for Timberlake Grocery Company of Thomasville for 30 years and then as a buyer for Adel Grocery Company/Head Distributing for 9 years, retiring in 2002. Other than family members, he is survived by his spiritual family at New Shiloh Baptist Church, where he was a member all of his life. There he served in many positions such as Music Director, Sunday School Superintendent, Treasurer and Trustee as well as on numerous committees. He also loved to mow the grass and play ball with the children. He would sit on the bench on the front porch and wait for children to arrive so he could play ball until the service started and then continue after the service had ended. His memories of playing with these children as well as with many nieces and nephews were special to him. He had a love and appreciation for God's creation and enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, yard work, softball, golf and collecting Indian artifacts. He was also gifted artistically with the ability to draw and write poetry. He enjoyed playing his guitar and singing, as well as working crossword puzzles. Visitation will be at New Shiloh Baptist Church, 13437 U.S. Highway 319 North, Thomasville, Georgia on Friday, April 21, from 5 to 7 p.m. The funeral service will also be held at New Shiloh on Saturday, April 22, 2017 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, you may send donations to New Shiloh Baptist Church, Fellowship Hall Building Fund, Attention: Trina Spence, Treasurer, 13437 US Hwy 319 N, Thomasville, GA 31757.
