Heywood Mason

Events

For 94 full Years, Paw Paw has filled our world with goodness. Born August 17, 1925 A. Heywood Mason (affectionately known as Paw Paw) has departed this life...for a better one... on August 18, 2019, the day after his 94th birthday. A modest brief recount of his life is all he would allow here.

Brought into this world on Susina Plantation, Heywood spent his early years growing up in the country. Darlington School in Rome, Georgia is where he completed his last four years of high school, proudly serving on the Honor Council and as its president.

His college career at the University of North Carolina was shortened when the Army summoned him. At 18 years old he trained with the 88th Infantry and was sent to Italy in World War II as a very young foot soldier. The horrors and death of war made a profound impact on him as he served his country with dignity. A special blessing for him was to be a participant on the Honor Flight to Washington, DC in 2016 being honored along with veteran peers. His devotion to his country never wavered.

A well-known poultry farmer in Grady County, Georgia, Paw Paw left his mark in many places. Perhaps his proudest civic contribution is the creation of Brookwood School in Thomasville, Georgia in 1970 along with his wife and a few other diligent couples...a gift that continues to so positively mold young American citizens.

Mr. Mason's devoted wife Edith King Mason, passed away in 2011. Carrying on are their four children:

Edie Goldie (Mike)

Bruzz Mason (Lois)

Sherry Thomas (Rick)

Claudia Mason (Jody)

and 11 grandchildren plus 15 great-grandchildren. The family will host a joyous celebration at his home, 82 Painted Pony Trail, Monticello, Florida on Saturday August 24, 2019 at 4:00 PM. A private family service will be held at another time. In lieu of flowers, any donations may be made to his beloved Brookwood School, 301 Cardinal Ridge Road, Thomasville, Georgia 31792 (brookwoodschool.org) or the charity of your choice.

Our prayers and thoughts are with the Mason Family as they honor their "Paw Paw" and the legacy he left to them, to South Georgia and to his country. We see the love of animals as evidence through Sherry "Bob" and her Painted Ponies . They have served Camp HEAL, grief camp for children for several years and bring delight to the campers. Some children have never ridden a horse or been close to one.
