Funeral service for Barry Mitchell will be Saturday, November 4, 2017, at Disciples of Jesus Ministries at 1 p.m. Public viewing will be Friday, November 3, 2017 from 1 until 7 p.m. On July 13, 1960 in Tampa, Florida, a fighter was born to Hattie and the late Charles Mitchell. Barry Jon Mitchell Sr. and his family relocated to New York City shortly after his birth, where he resided until he joined the United States Navy in 1977. In 1981 after serving in the US Navy, Barry moved to Thomasville, where he raised his family and served as a clerk for the United States Postal Service. During his time with the USPS he also served as the president of the local postal union and secretary/treasurer for the state postal union. In 2012, he was diagnosed with cancer which he fought until October 28 2017 when God decided he had fought long enough. Barry leaves to celebrate his legacy: mother, Hattie M. Mitchell, Thomasville; son, Barry J Mitchell Jr, (Antionea) Thomasville; daughters, Elisabeth B. Mitchell, Atlanta, Takiya Tillman of Jacksonville, Florida, Sharika Fletcher of Jacksonville, Florida, three sisters: Carrie (Dale) Smith, Thomasville, Sherri Mitchell, Tampa, Florida, and Beverly Singletary, Amsterdam, New York, three brothers, Edward K. Mitchell, Thomasville, Bobby Mitchell, (NC), Jeffrey (Elaine) Mitchell Schenectady, New York; uncle, Sam (Bessie) Mitchell, Thomasville; aunts, Velma Middleton, Virginia, Mable Davis, Thomasville, Lucille (Victor) Greene, Virginia, Martha Williams, Virginia, Ceatrice Feugeon, Atlanta; six grandchildren. He also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
