Funeral services for Mr. Alton Powell will be held graveside at Greenwood Cemetery, Highway 84, Cairo, GA, on Friday, April 7, 2017 at 11 a.m. Reverend Sylvester Williams, Officiating. Mr. Alton Powell was born on January 10, 1927 to Ellis Austin Powell and Mary Davis Powell. He was educated in the public school system of Grady County. At the age of 18, he entered military service, drafted in the U.S. Army serving in WWII. On April 17, 1949, Alton was united in marriage to Lillian Thomas and to this union a daughter was born. Alton worked for Ira Higdon Grocery & Shipping Company for 30 plus years. In 1976, he began work with the Grady County Board of Education as purchasing agent, retiring in 1996. He also maintained partnership with Sunshine Cleaners of Cairo until 2005. He served the City of Cairo as a member of the Grady County Zoning Committee for five years. Mr. Alton Powell passed on April 3, 2017. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Lillian Thomas; daughter, Eleanor (Benny) Clark of West Columbia, South Carolina; grandson, Alton Powell Clark of Grenville, South Carolina; sister, Rosa Nell Gilbert of McDonough; adopted daughter, Annie Doris Jackson of Cairo; adopted son, Willie Coakley of Cairo; adopted daughter, Virginia Coakley of Cairo; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends, all of whom he loved and enjoyed very much.
